Community Description

Pinheiros is a neighborhood located in the west of the municipality of São Paulo belonging to the district of Pinheiros, established in 1560 on the banks of the Pinheiros River. Currently, it has three Metro stations on Line 4-Yellow: Pinheiros Station (integrated with the CPTM train station and urban bus terminal), located close to Avenida das Nações Unidas and Sesc Pinheiros; Faria Lima, located on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, next to Largo da Batata, and Fradique Coutinho, located on Rua dos Pinheiros. It is home to several companies, such as: Odebrecht, Brasilinvest, Unibanco and 3DTEK.

It is limited to the neighborhoods: Jardim Paulistano, Vila Madalena and Alto de Pinheiros, in addition to Cidade Jardim and City Butantã, located on the other bank of the Pinheiros River.
Urbanization of the neighborhood

Pinheiros and Butantã neighborhoods in 1913.
The village's population began with a few dozen indigenous people in Aldeia de Pinheiros and reached the end of the 19th century, already as a neighborhood of Pinheiros, with around 200 houses. The first bakery was opened in 1890 and the second in 1900. During this period there was still a landing for drovers and the economy was mainly subsistence, with the sale of some agricultural items or those produced in charcoal and brickworks, due to the region's excellent clay. Bricks and tiles were manufactured in these brickworks, which little by little replaced rammed earth in buildings throughout the city of São Paulo.

Urbanization and post-colonial economic development began in the region only during the coffee cycle: in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, the region received Italian immigrants and, in the first half of the 20th century, Japanese immigrants. Maps of São Paulo, throughout the 19th century, frequently indicate the Estrada de Cotia or Estrada de Sorocaba and, until the end of that century, only the Caminho dos Pinheiros connected Vila dos Pinheiros to the city of São Paulo, but the From 1897 onwards, the plan of Vila de Pinheiros began to be represented, showing the streets existing in that period: in 1897, the neighborhood showed its main access road, which came from São Paulo and continued to Cotia (the old Caminho do Peabiru, equivalent to the current Rua Butantã), but also the current streets Teodoro Sampaio and Paes Leme; these two access roads to São Paulo were then crossed by just five streets: the current ones Fernão Dias, Padre Carvalho, Ferreira de Araújo, Amaro Cavalheiro and Eugênio de Medeiros.

At the end of the 19th century, the Vila Operária de Pinheiros was built, on the right side of the current Rua dos Pinheiros and Avenida Rebouças (towards the center, from the current Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima), while the region's rural space was rapidly disappearing in the region, from the 1930s.[17]

It is interesting to highlight that, according to maps of the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, such as the "General Plan of the Capital of São Paulo organized under the direction of Dr. Gomes Cardim" (1897) and the Plan of Vila Operária de Pinheiros, the Caminho dos Pinheiros (formerly Caminho do Peabiru), until the 1920s was clearly marked in the upper part of Avenida Rebouças (from Avenida Consolação to Avenida Brasil) and - from where Avenida Brasil is today and Praça Portugal (crossing a stream and a pond) - continued by the current Rua dos Pinheiros and Rua Butantã. At the end of that decade, a street was built that ran in the same direction as Avenida Rebouças (towards the current Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima), initially called Rua Itapirussu and later Rua Coronel Boaventura Rosa, but which ended up being unified with Avenida Rebouças from the 1990s onwards. 1930, renaming the section behind the pond as Rua dos Pinheiros.

The progressive change in the configuration of the neighborhood, due to the increase in the number of houses and streets, was documented in maps published in the following years: in the first decade of the 20th century, Rua Arco Verde (currently Rua Cardeal Arco-Verde) was built and installed, on Rua Teodoro Sampaio, the tram line connecting Pinheiros to the center of São Paulo: started in 1904, the tram line passed through the Araçá cemetery and reached the intersection of Rua Teodoro Sampaio and Rua Capote Valente. Largo de Pinheiros was awarded this tram line only in 1909, after drainage and landfilling in the entire area between the two points.[4]

The Pinheiros Market was opened in 1910 and was initially nothing more than an area surrounded by barbed wire with a small shed in the center, where local farmers and those from Itapecerica da Serra, Carapicuíba, Piedade, M'Boy, but mainly from Cotia, sold their products. .[18] The area that was between Mercado de Pinheiros and Largo de Pinheiros and which, from the beginning of the 20th century, began to receive farmers from Cotia (predominantly Japanese) who went to the region to sell potatoes (the main agricultural product de Cotia in the first decades of the 20th century) and parked their carts and animals there, it ended up being called, for this reason, Largo da Batata.[19]

In the decade of 1910 the neighborhood was expanded, with the construction of the new working-class neighborhood of Vila Cerqueira César and a working-class neighborhood between the current streets Fernão Dias, Padre Carvalho and Ferreira de Araújo, both based on the model of the working-class neighborhoods of Mooca and Brás, made up of short streets and small houses, with the front next to the sidewalk and the side walls close to neighboring houses, with no front or side space for gardens, but with a backyard and, occasionally, a small building in the back. This led to an intense change in the profile of the neighborhood: in 1915, public lighting was inaugurated and, in 1929, piped water services began and the streets were paved with cobblestones. At the same time, the space between the Pinheiros neighborhood and the center of São Paulo was quickly urbanized, becoming easily traversed by tram.

The oldest neighborhood in São Paulo
São Paulo, without a doubt, is one of the oldest states since the colonization of Brazil, a fact that makes this beautiful territory carry a lot of history and knowledge! Today, inhabited by more than 44 million people spread across the territory, São Paulo has one of the oldest neighborhoods in Brazil: the Pinheiros neighborhood, located in the center of São Paulo.

Curiosity
Today, Pinheiros is known for its modern art galleries, funky cafes, live music venues and the innovative bars and bistros of the Pinheiros region. Bringing a modern and noble infrastructure, perfect for permanent or temporary housing, it is also attractive for tourism, with the fun Benedito Calixto Market, which enjoys creative menus, street food, antiques, specialized stores and live bands.

Story
To reach this level, the stunning neighborhood of Pinheiros was also the target of great historical landmarks for Brazil, which is increasingly valued. Initially, before the arrival of the Portuguese, it was dominated by native Indians, who called it ''Pi-iêrê'', which means ''Spilled'', in reference to the great floods that happened there.

In 1562, the native people of the place, with the failed attempt to attack São Paulo, left the territory to settle in Nossa Senhora dos Pinheiros -now known as Largo da Batata-, which gave rise to the colonization of the current neighborhood. of Pinheiros, where a series of innovations and constructions began. Being one of the main points of São Paulo, it connected the parish and the commerce of the region with other more distant places across the river, drawing attention to the floods and beauty.

The neighborhood actually began to develop in the mid-eighteenth century, with constructions of churches and residences. The development of the territory intensified at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with the arrival of immigrants -mostly Italians and Japanese-, and with the coffee cycle, which supplied and gave strength to the cultural urban growth of the local.

A little more
With the infrastructure (water, transport and electricity) being developed and worked intensively for over a century, Pinheiros is considered one of the most sophisticated neighborhoods in São Paulo society, with a large and diverse commercial network, in addition to a unique cultural life. At the present time, this elegant neighborhood demonstrates its essence not only with its attractions and charming places, but also in the residents of the region, who define it as "today the Pinheiros neighborhood is undergoing a very big revitalization [...] . It is also a neighborhood that allows you to live close to your work, as it has many commercial and residential properties in the same region'', he also completed ''a neighborhood in which there is a lot of nightlife, many schools and college, in addition to great mobility. , with up to 5 subway stations serving,'' quoted Roberto Duarte, brooker responsible for the RE/MAX Solution franchise, showing that Pinheiros is not just a neighborhood, but a home with a high standard of living.

Today in Pinheiros, RE/MAX franchises can be found throughout the neighborhood!
