Community Description

The Penha Circular neighborhood received this name, because when there were still Maria Fumaça trains, they used a circular line that existed at the location of the current Penha Circular Station to maneuver the locomotives. Its existence is ignored by many, who end up considering it as an extension of Penha, Brás de Pina or Vila da Penha.

In the neighborhood is located the wholesale complex Mercado São Sebastião on the banks of Avenida Brasil, a factory of the underwear brand DeMillus on Av. Lobo Júnior and Hospital Mário Kroeff (reference in cancer treatment). The neighborhood has the Ary Barroso Park, where the Carioca Dicró Arena is located and a 24-hour UPA, in addition to having the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, close by in the Penha neighborhood. Along Avenida Brás de Pina and Av. Vicente de Carvalho is located the BRT TransCarioca, connecting the neighborhood to other parts of the city such as Madureira, Jacarepaguá, Barra da Tijuca and the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood has a small shop along Avenida Lobo Júnior and a shop considered strong in Praça do Carmo (which is not Vila da Penha), which supplies not only the residents of the neighborhood but also the neighboring Vila da Penha, Brás de Pina and Villa Kosmos. At Rua Bento Cardoso there is a branch of Prezunic Supermercados, while at Praça do Carmo there is a branch of Extra (retail). The neighborhood has schools, pharmacies, clothing stores, banks (Santander, Itaú, Bradesco and Caixa Econômica Federal) bars and a campus of Candido Mendes University. Close to Praça do Carmo was located the famous Olimpo concert hall, which after being closed for 7 years, has now resumed its activities under the name of Rio Music with capacity to serve an audience of 6,000 people.
