Piracaia is a Brazilian municipality in the state of São Paulo. It is located at an altitude of 792 meters. Its estimated population in 2020 is 27,462 inhabitants. Its name is of Tupi origin and means "roasted fish", through the combination of pirá ("fish") and kaîa ("roasted"). The municipality is made up of the headquarters and the district of Batatuba.
The city of Piracaia was founded on June 16, 1817, with the name of Santo Antônio da Cachoeira, as a neighborhood of Nazaré Paulista, by Dona Leonor de Oliveira Franco and her children, who donated land to build a chapel in praise to Santo Antônio. The exact location of the foundation is the current Praça Júlio Mesquita, where the current Igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio da Cachoeira was built and inaugurated on June 16, 1891.
Located in Serra da Mantiqueira, it has many waterfalls and mountains.
The most famous tourist attraction is the Igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio da Cachoeira, whose ceiling has paintings of all the popes. It is the second church in the world to have such a collection, the first being Saint Paul's Basilica, in Rome, Italy. Another famous tourist spot is Santo Cruzeiro, which is the largest in the world.
The city has three dams: Jaguari-Jacareí dam, Cachoeira dam and Atibainha dam, and is bathed by the Cachoeira and Atibainha rivers. The Cachoeira river, which surrounds the "Dr. Gilberto José Nogueira Ecological Park" in Piracaia, also passes through the municipalities of Bom Jesus dos Perdões and Joanópolis.
