Campos Elíseos[note 1] is a neighborhood in the city of São Paulo located in the district of Santa Cecília, central region. It was the first planned neighborhood in the city, where several of the old and wealthy coffee farmers settled. [1][2]

In Campos Elíseos is located the former headquarters of the Government of the State of São Paulo, the Palácio dos Campos Elíseos, which previously belonged to the aristocrat and politician Elias Antônio Pacheco e Chaves, located in the old Alameda dos Bambus, future Avenida Rio Branco, and which provided the reuse of his intertwined initials "EC" for "CE", on the mansion's gates, as well as on all crockery, silverware, etc. of the previous owner. The Government headquarters was later transferred, after suffering a fire, to Palácio dos Bandeirantes, in Morumbi. It later housed the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Economic Development of the State of São Paulo. The Sala São Paulo and Estação Júlio Prestes, which was renovated to be the largest concert hall in the city, are also located in the neighborhood.
The Campos Elíseos neighborhood was designed and subdivided by Swiss businessmen at the end of the 19th century, in 1878, notably by the Swiss Frederico Glete and the German Victor Nothmann, who acquired an old farm in a place known as Campo Redondo and subdivided it. To do this, they hired the German architect Herman von Puttkamer, who designed the urban planning of the area.

The location was privileged: close to Estação Sorocabana, opened in 1878 (current Estação Júlio Prestes station) and Estação da Luz and, at the same time, not far from the city center, the spacious plots of land were ideal for housing the mansions and residences of coffee barons when they came to the capital on business. The Liceu Coração de Jesus, a renowned educational institution, also established itself in the area. And the main hospital in the city at the time, the Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo, was nearby.

Some of the streets were named after these businessmen's surnames or in honor of their countries of origin, such as Alameda Glette, Alameda Nothmann, Alameda Cleveland and Rua Helvetia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Campos Elíseos was a very elegant neighborhood, housing the mansions and residences of coffee barons and the official residence of the President of the State of São Paulo (current governor of the State): the Palácio dos Campos Elíseos, on Avenida Rio Branco, one of its most important routes.

In the 1924 Paulista Revolt, the neighborhood was bombed and during the fighting several parts of the city were hit, especially working-class neighborhoods such as Mooca, Ipiranga, Brás, Belenzinho and Centro, which were seriously affected by the bombings.
