Community Description

Tijuca: land of samba, health and faith

Three of the most important samba schools in Rio de Janeiro are from the neighborhood: Unidos da Tijuca, founded in 1931, in the Borel community; the Império da Tijuca, founded in 1940, in the community of Formiga; and Academicos do Salgueiro, from 1953, from the community of the same name. In Morro da Formiga, by the way, lived Carmen Miranda's favorite composer. Born in Juiz de Fora, in 1911, Synval Silva lived on the hill from 1930 until his death in 1994. He was the author of the hit Adeus, Batucada and many others, immortalized in the voice of Pequena Notável.

There are also many clubs in the neighborhood, mostly Portuguese associations, such as Casa dos Poveiros or Casa das Beiras, which preserve folklore performances or promote dances. Clube América, which gave rise to the América Football Club team, was founded in 1904, when members of Clube Atlético Tijuca, dedicated to cycling and racing, decided to try out a sport called football, which was arriving in the country. A few years earlier, in 1900, that same street, Campos Sales, had been opened by the National Equestrian Society and named Rua do Hipódromo. Horse races even took place on the same land where football matches would later be played. Another very important club in the neighborhood is Tijuca Tênis Clube, which celebrates its first centenary in 2015.

The large number of religious temples in Tijuca, sometimes neighboring, despite belonging to the most different denominations, is surprising. The protagonist among them is undoubtedly the Church of São Sebastião dos Frades Capuchinhos, built between 1928 and 1931, on Rua Haddock Lobo. The temple houses several historical and artistic objects from the Church of the Capuchins of Morro do Castelo, demolished by the urbanization process, in 1922 – it houses the Stone Foundation of the City, the image of São Sebastião from the original church, the tombstone and the remains mortals of the founder of Rio de Janeiro, Estácio de Sá. Many hospitals also have their origins in religious orders. One of the oldest is the Evangelical Hospital, on Rua Bom Pastor, whose headquarters were inaugurated in 1912. In the 1920s, on land donated by the Guinle family, a pioneering hospital was built for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the cancer: the Gaffrée and Guinle University Hospital.
