Community Description

Olaria is a neighborhood in the Leopoldina Zone, a historical region in the North Zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its population originated mainly from Portuguese immigrants, with a smaller number of Italians. Its Human Development Index in the year 2000 was 0.853, making it the 52nd best neighborhood in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The streets are generally strictly residential, featuring houses and buildings of good standard, including the Bariri Street stadium, which belongs to Olaria Atlético Clube.

It shares borders with the Penha and Ramos neighborhoods.

The neighborhood is home to the headquarters of the Leopoldina Regional Forum, which, in 2011, inaugurated its new building on Filomena Nunes Street, near the Olaria stadium.

The name Olaria originated from the sugar mill owners who maintained numerous kilns in the area. The first pottery was built in 1821, initiated by the Ferreira family, taking advantage of the abundance of clay from Morro do Alemão, which belonged to the family at that time.

With the implementation of the railway, started in 1882, and the establishment of the first stops (Olaria, Bonsucesso, and Ramos), it became evident that the business would prosper. Around 1886, progress in the area was marked by the whistle of the iron locomotive of the Northern Railway.
