Barra da Tijuca is a neighborhood in the West Zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The neighborhood is part of the administrative region of Barra da Tijuca. It has, as neighboring districts, Itanhangá, Camorim, São Conrado, Jacarepaguá, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Curicica and Joá. Like Jacarepaguá, it is one of the neighborhoods that grew the most in Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 20th century to the 21st century; went from 24,126 inhabitants in 1980 to 394,037 inhabitants in 2020.
Currently, it is considered a financial, gastronomic, hotel and entertainment center of the state capital. It has been the target of migration from other neighborhoods in the municipality. It is estimated that the population of Barra will double by 2030.
In 2020, its quality of life index was evaluated at 0.972, reaching the 1st place in Rio de Janeiro, among 126 evaluated neighborhoods.
The effective occupation of the region initially took place at its extremities, in the current sub-neighborhoods Barrinha and Jardim Oceânico, which have the same urban rules and construction limits, different from the rest of the region. To cater for the new subdivisions in Jardim Oceânico, the private sector built the Ponte Nova over the Tijuca lagoon. The great milestone in the beginning of the development of Barra, however, took place during the administration of the governor of the state of Guanabara Negrão de Lima, who commissioned an urban project for the region from urban planner Lúcio Costa.
The Plano Piloto of Barra da Tijuca in 1969, similar to the Plano Piloto of Brasilia, inspired by rationalist urbanism, with large avenues and large open spaces, definitely marked the beginning of Barra's peculiar lifestyle.
In the 1970s, the Lagoa-Barra Highway was built (including the Joá Tunnel), which enabled further development in the neighborhood, reducing transport time to the south of the city of Rio. large closed condominiums, inspired by a then new model of life, with emphasis on Nova Ipanema and Novo Leblon.
