The current District of Bonfim Paulista was initially known as Viaduto, or Chave do Viaduto due to the existence of a viaduct for train passage.

In this place there was a "key" for opening and moving the rail fittings. Between the years 1883 and 1885, the town was then known as Viaduto or Chave do Viaduto (unofficial name).

In 1895, the Villa Bonfim Police District was created, belonging to the municipality of Ribeirão Preto.

On January 18, 1897, Municipal Intendant Joaquim Estanislau da Silva Gusmão signed Law no. 22, promulgating the deliberation of the City Council (of December 28, 1896), transforming Villa Bonfim into a Municipal District.

This law also defined the territory of the District, established the assessment of property taxes, the establishment of the Public Lighting service and the creation of the Municipal Cemetery.

Through Law no. 840, on October 3, 1902, the Villa Bonfim Peace District was created.

On December 30, 1938, through Act no. 28, signed by Municipal Mayor Fábio de Sá Barreto, the urban perimeter of Villa Bonfim and its territory were defined, for legal and tax purposes.

Through State Decree no. 9775, of November 30, 1938, Villa Bonfim was renamed Bonfim.
