Community Description

The history of Vila Prudente began at the beginning of the 16th century with the donation of a land grant to João Ramalho, so that he could populate it.
After three centuries, in 1829, businessman João Pedroso acquired lots and created recreational sites in the area, where he raised cattle and planted fruit trees.
Little by little, he expanded the limits of the area, which began to encompass the lower reaches of Zimbaúba (currently Vila Zelina, Vila Bela and Jardim Independência).

Vila Prudente was founded on October 4, 1890. It was in this year that the Italian immigrants Falchi Brothers (Emiídio, Panfilio and Bernardino Falchi), with the help of financier Serafino Corso, bought the plot of land from Martinha Maria, widow of Antônio Pedroso and installed the first industry in the region, the Falchi Chocolates Factory.
The name of the neighborhood (and district) comes from the admiration that the Falchi brothers, owners at the time of its foundation, had for the then president of the state of São Paulo, Prudente de Morais, who would be, years later, the first president of Brazil of São Paulo origin. .
It can be seen, perhaps oversized, in the plan by Gomes Cardim, from 1897.
The neighborhood began to be served by a tram line in 1912, leaving from Praça Padre Damião, and going to Praça da Sé. The line, number 32, was deactivated along with the rest of the network in the 1960s
