Tijuca has its origins linked to water. The Taunay Waterfall, in the Tijuca Forest, is a postcard of the City of Rio de Janeiro.

The region became characterized by its farms and, from the twentieth century, became a typically urban neighborhood. Even so, it has the third largest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca Forest, planted by order of Dom Pedro II in the second half of the nineteenth century by Major Archer on coffee lands

The neighborhood has excellent means of urban mobility and integration between modes, served by Line 1 of the Rio Metro through four stations: Afonso Pena, São Francisco Xavier, Saens Peña and Uruguay, the latter inaugurated in March 2014, on the day of its inauguration and is currently the northern terminus of Line 1 of the Rio de Janeiro Metro.

Tijuca has 3 traditionally established gastronomic centers:[55] Varnhagen Square, Uruguay Street and Mariz e Barros Street, as well as Saens Peña Square with many bars, pastry shops and restaurants.

In Saens Peña Square and its surroundings there are various activities of commerce and services, museums, cinemas, theaters, traditional schools, shopping malls, among others that attract residents to the neighborhood.

Shopping Tijuca, inaugurated in 1996,[72] located at 987 Maracanã Avenue, occupies the block bounded by Eng. Enaldo Cravo Peixoto Street and Luís La Saigne Square and Celso da Rocha Miranda Square, consolidates its presence in the neighborhood by attracting consumers from other regions, especially for the ease of access thanks to the proximity of the Saens Peña Station of the Rio Metro.

Next to it, between Rua Eng. Enaldo Cravo Peixoto and Rua Barão de Mesquita, is installed the Tijuca Off Shopping open to the public since December 30, 1983 with about 100 stores arranged in 3 galleries - Red, Blue and Green.

Shopping 45 is located in Plaza Saens Peña and concentrates stores, doctors' offices and service offices of various segments.

Many traditional restaurants are present in the neighborhood such as: Buxixo Choperia; Fiorino Ristorante; La Mole; Pizzeria Domenica; Parme; King of Codfish; Turino Restaurant; Crab; Toca da Traira e Umas e Ostras.
