Papicu is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Fortaleza due to its growing occupation. Large homes are giving way to apartment communities in this quiet neighborhood. The variety of commerce and services is also a strong characteristic.
Located in the eastern part of the city, Papicu borders Praia do Futuro, Vicente Pinzón (a popular neighborhood) and Cocó (a high-end neighborhood), in addition to being very close to Aldeota and the south zone of the city. Parque do Cocó, very close to Papicu, is an illustrious neighbor: "The highlight of the neighborhood is the location", points out professor Sylvia Cavalcante.
On the edges of the neighborhood, Avenida Santos Dumont runs from the Center to Praia do Futuro, the east-west vector of the city, while Avenida Engenheiro Santana Jr. and Via Expressa (whose official name is Avenida Almirante Henrique Sabóia), allow for movement.
Two of the main hospitals in the capital of Ceará are in Papicu, the Hospital Geral de Fortaleza (HGF), a public hospital, and the Hospital São Matheus, a private hospital. Both have emergency care. The health services offered at nearby addresses also include specialized clinics and gyms.
One of the largest shopping malls in the city, Rio Mar, is in Papicu, very close to the Lagoa that gives the neighborhood its name. Large markets are also within this perimeter, as well as smaller ones. As Papicu was formed as a neighborhood of large houses, many of them were adapted and are now party buffets.
The Papicu Bus Terminal has high traffic and integrates the lines. Being closed, it is possible to do this integration without paying a second ticket. There are 45 lines circulating.
Next to the terminal there is a VLT station, where the Parangaba-Mucuripe line passes. While the operation is in the testing phase, there is no fee charged from Parangaba Station to Estação Iate. This line runs for approximately 13.2 km, passing through 10 stations: Parangaba, Montese, Vila União, Borges de Melo, São João do Tauape, Pontes Vieira, Antônio Sales, Papicu, Mucuripe and Iate. The Yate station ends at Beira Mar, very close to the Fish Market.
Some private and public daycare centers and schools are located in Papicu. In the Rio Mar shopping center it is possible to find a Cearense Language Center (CCI), an initiative of the State Department of Education.
Despite the many commercial addresses, concentrated in certain points, Papicu's wide streets are primarily residential facades. Walking journeys are mainly made on busy roads throughout the day. At night, the movement does not completely stop, but the neighborhood retreats.
